About

Lebo Matchaba

Lebo Matchaba is a South African-based mixed-media artist whose work explores self-discovery, existence, and the profound power of the inner self. Using a combination of charcoal, acrylic, and pastel, her art bridges different mediums to create bold yet minimalist pieces that reflect life’s dualities—reality and dreams, light and shadow, individuality and connection.

Her artistic journey began in high school, where she studied art theory and history, building a strong foundation for her creative expression. However, it was during a significant break from creating that her passion was reignited. This return to art brought a deeply intuitive and spiritual dimension to her practice, shaping her current approach.

For Lebo, color is more than just a visual element—it’s alive, an emotional experience, and a vibrant form of storytelling. Her work celebrates the beauty of simplicity, the courage it takes to embrace creativity, and the act of expressing oneself fully. Each piece she creates is a testament to existence and an invitation for viewers to reflect on their own journeys.

Through her art, Lebo seeks to remind us that creating is not just an act of expression—it is a celebration of being, a bold statement of presence, and a connection to something greater.

Thoughts in my Art

My artwork isn’t about looking real—it’s about how real it makes me feel. I love exploring the magic that happens when different mediums come together to create something extraordinary. Colour fascinates me; it shapes the way we see, feel, and experience the world. To me, color isn’t just visual—it’s alive, a feeling, a life experience in itself.

I often work on multiple pieces at the same time, embracing the complexity of thoughts and life. It’s in this space of contrasts—balance and imbalance, yin and yang—that I thrive. My art reflects the dance between reality and dreams, showing how simplicity can unlock creative flow and ease resistance.

At its core, my work is about existence—what it means to simply be in this life. Living is an act of courage. Writing is an act of bravery. And creating? It’s my way of saying, “I’m here.”

Through my art, I hope to take you on a journey—to remind us all that every sign, every choice, carries meaning. Despite our differences, our shared experiences unite us. Every day I grow, every day I become braver, every day I create. And every day, I am simply being.

‘‘Painting is about living in my head and heart and letting those visions express themselves freely in this world.’’
